Need help with a current event (california's quake)?

I am igned with a current event from school and im a bit confused. I would like to know what connection canada has to the u.s quake that took place in california last sunday. What connection do we have with it? As we all know there are the five W's (who what when where and why) what would someone write for the what and why ?
